A saw-wielding man died after sustaining injuries during a confrontation with the police in Edmonton on Saturday.
The Edmonton Police in a statement said the incident took place at around 5:45 am in the area of 152 Street and 102 Avenue.
The statement further added that the officers witnessed a man beneath a parked vehicle with a saw as they drove through an alley in the neighborhood.
“The responding officers engaged with the man and a confrontation occurred. During the confrontation, the man produced a firearm and a conductive energy weapon (CEW) was deployed by one of the officers,” the statement said, adding that shortly thereafter, the man sustained a single gunshot wound.
The Edmonton Police also added that the responding officers performed life-saving measures on the 50-year-old man until paramedics arrived and transported him to hospital.
However, the man succumbed to his injuries around 12:40 p.m. and an autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday, July 8, 2021.
According to Edmonton Police, the responding officers did not sustain any physical injuries during this incident.
Meanwhile, the Edmonton Police said, based on the evidence available, it is not believed either of the officers discharged their service weapons.
