The U.S. Special Envoy for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad has vowed to engage with Qatar and Taliban for the evacuation of Americans, other foreign nationals, and the Afghans that want to leave Afghanistan.
“Over the last three days, over 250 foreign nationals, including dozens of U.S. citizens and permanent residents, departed Kabul unhindered on Qatari flights. This is positive,” Khalilzad said in a statement posted on Twitter.
Khalilzad further added “Our thanks go out to Qatar for its help facilitating these flights, and we welcome the Taliban’s cooperation in this important effort.”
He also added “We will continue to engage the government of Qatar, the Taliban, and others to ensure the safe passage of our citizens, other foreign nationals, and Afghans that want to leave.”
A U.S. official had earlier told Reuters that the Taliban authorities have agreed to let 200 American civilians and third country nationals to leaving Afghanistan in charter flights.
The official speaking on the condition of anonymity further added that the U.S. envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad had pressed the Taliban to allow the departures.
