“I am here to announce the completion of our withdrawal from Afghanistan and the end of the military mission to evacuate American citizens, third country nationals and vulnerable Afghans. The last C-17 lifted off at Hamid Karzai International Airport on August 30th, this afternoon, at 3:29 pm East Coast Time,” CENTCOM Commander, Marine Corps Gen. Kenneth McKenzie Jr. said.
Gen. McKenzie further added that the last manned aircraft is now clearing the airspace of Afghanistan.
He also added that while the military evacuation is complete, the diplomatic mission to ensure the additional US citizens and eligible Afghans who want to leave continues.
Meanwhile, celebratory gunfire erupted in Kabul following the departure of the U.S. forces.
Zabiullah Mujahid, a spokesperson for the Taliban group said the gunfire heard in Kabul are celebratory gunfire, assuring the residents of the city that efforts are underway to control the situation.
