Britain’s Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Matt Hancock on Saturday announced his resignation after pictures of his kissing his aide surfaced.
“I am writing to resign as Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. We have worked so hard as a country to fight the pandemic. The last thing I would want is for my private life to distract attention from the single-minded focus that is leading us out of this crisis,” Hancock wrote in his resignation letter.
He also added “I want to reiterate my apology for breaking the guidance, and apologize to my family and loved ones for putting them through this. I also need be with my children at this time.”
This comes as a snap poll by by YouGov found that 49% of those surveyed thought Hancock should step down, up from 36% in May.
Behavioral scientists advising the government warned that the health secretary’s public disregard for the social distancing rules could undermine public compliance, according to The Guardian.
The Sun on Friday released a one minute and ten seconds long video captured by CCTV which showed Hancock kissing Gina Coladangelo, a friend of him from his days at Oxford University.
The video was apparently taken on 6th of May, nearly two weeks before Britain eased the social distancing rules to allow hugging.
