Alberta reports 6,163 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday

Alberta is reporting 6,163 new cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) over a 24 hour period.

Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, said the health authorities identified the new cases by completing 16,541 tests.

Dr. Hinshaw further added that the positivity rate in Alberta was 37.9 per cent.

She also added that five additional deaths due to COVID-19 were also reported to Alberta Health Services in the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Dr. Hinshaw, said there are now 822 people in hospital with COVID-19, including 81 in Intensive Care Unit.

Since Jan 10, 61% of new hospitalizations were due to COVID infection and 39% were either incidental or it was unclear if COVID contributed, Dr. Hinshaw said, adding that 75% of new ICU admissions were due to COVID infection & 25% were either incidental or it was unclear if COVID contributed.

The Alberta Health on Thursday reported 6,010 new cases of COVID-19 and 8 additional deaths over a 24 hour period.
