Alberta reports 1,609 new COVID-19 cases, 24 deaths over 24 hours

The Alberta Health on Wednesday reported 1,609 new positive cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and 24 additional deaths.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, said the Alberta Health completed 15,800 tests in the past 24 hours and identified 1,609 new positive cases.

Furthermore, Dr. Hinshaw said 24 new deaths related to COVID-19 were also reported to Alberta health during the period.

Dr. Hinshaw further added that there are 877 people in hospital due to COVID-19. “Of the 659 non-ICU, 73.4% are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. Of the 218 in ICU, 92.3% are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.”

She also added that today’s numbers underscore how serious COVID-19 can be, and the need for every Albertan to take steps now to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our health-care system by getting vaccinated.
